My Top 30 Songs of 2009 – Number 14
14) Jordin Sparks - Battlefield
One of the most annoying and yet catchy songs of the year. The repetitive-ness of the song was amazing. Seriously how many times can you say "Battlefield" and "Get Your Armor"? Yet the song was so damn catchy that I couldn't stop listening to it.
I thought the music video was smart but simplistic. Smoke? Check. Flares? Check. Pretty girl in a pretty dress? Hell this video could have been "99 Red Balloons" if you didn't tell me. I figure a stereotypical "war torn" music video wasn't that big on budget, as if someone was like "Hey! Fourth of July Sale! Jordin, do you have any dresses from David's Bridal?"
I rank Jordin Sparks pretty high on my American Idol winners list (It at the moment goes Kelly, Carrie, Jordin... I don't care for the rest...but if you ask I think it continues as David, Kris, Ruben, Taylor, Fantasia), but even I know while she has a voice, she doesn't have the passion in it. There's a huge gap between Carrie Underwood and her.
In the end, I think "Battlefield" had more of an effect on my music than "S.O.S. (Let the music play)" this year because of exposure. I like the music video to "S.O.S." better, but you can't really go wrong when you have a club scene, taking a note from Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy," and spray paint.
