18) Mariah Carey – Obsessed

I don’t believe that “Obsessed” became the hit that Mariah wanted it to be. It was her whole anti-Eminem song, trying to be like a rapper with her rap war. Unlike “Touch My Body” or “It’s Like Dat,” the song wasn’t as much of an impact for the introduction of her album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. The song is that stereotypical upbeat Mariah songs of the past few years. It didn’t have as cool of references to say, Wendy Williams, but it’s good.

I found the concept of the music video to be the best part of the whole equation. I find it hysterical when Mariah (or for some odd reason, Taylor Swift) dresses up as someone else. I thought the concept of Bianca from the two “Heartbreaker” videos was hysterical, so the fact that Mariah attempted to be an man in “Obsessed” was funny. There was this over the top nature that made the whole thing laughable.

Mariah will never be the same as she was in the 1990s. This new airy version of her is okay, but she won’t ever compare to her earlier work. I saw part of the Adventures of Mimi live performance, and she sounded like crap singing “My All” and “Dreamlover.” Kudos for trying Mariah. Maybe you should stop showing off skin and focus on that voice instead.
