[The Amazing Race - Season 18 Episode 1]

Finally in HD, The Amazing Race started its race in Palm Springs, California, emphasizing their wind generators. Eleven teams of returning contestants are:

Jet & Cord – Cut off at the airport
Margie & Luke – Final puzzle meltdown
Amanda & Kris – First U-Turn victims
Flight Time & Big Easy – Didn’t know who Kafka was
Mel & Mike – Wandered off course and were eliminated
Kent & Vyxin – Self-destructed
Gary & Mallory – Lost in Oman
Kisha & Jen – Pee break elimination
Zev & Justin – Lost passport
Ron & Christina – Yet another final puzzle victim
Jamie & Cara – Taxi drama queens

As all the teams arrived, Phil welcomed them and reminded the teams that the winners of the first leg get the Express Pass, introduced last season. Phil pointed out that there are no clues on the bag, but instead Phil has the clue. He announces that in a sea of paper airplanes, the teams have to find the answer to Phil’s clue. The first eight teams would get on the earliest flight, while the remaining three teams would get on the second flight, 90 minutes later. The big twist was that the last team would have an automatic U-Turn and will be forced to do both Detours in whichever leg had the first Detour. Of course, we have our shameless advertising from Ford Focus as the teams drive to LAX.

Phil’s Clue: Queensland & Northern Territories Aerial Services (Correct Answer: QANTAS)

Sometimes clothes are cool. Then a decade passes and you look like a dumbass.

Recently, my aunt has lit a small fire under the family to get rid of a lot of old clothes. We went through the storage room and pulled out countless numbers of garbage bags full of clothes. All the clothes unfortunately were a little moldy and kind of gross, so the family has spent the past few (you know the ones that don’t rain) days sprawling the clothes out in the sun to try to both dry the clothes and hopefully remove the smell. Let’s just say that the smell isn’t as strong, but still lingers.

I’ve had the task of sprawling out all the clothes from my childhood. Clothes I haven’t worn in more than 20 years. Little Oshkosh B’gosh overalls. Shirts with Mickey Mouse or Bart Simpson. A large number of polo shirts and shirts related to the following sports teams: The Yankees, Raiders, or Cowboys. I shrug about the Cowboys/Raiders; I assume that they were good back in the 90s. Weren’t the Raiders in a totally different city?

I continued to look at the sea of clothes and gawk at the color arrangements. There was a lot of neon pinks (worn by my sister mind you), but there were these shades of green, purple, and yellow that just shouted 90s. The patterns, the shapes used, and the cut made me want to laugh. I felt like I was watching Blossom on television.

My mother then pulls out her acid wash jeans.

Now my parents had a very “adult” sense of clothing choices. I never expected my mother to be the one to purchase fad-like clothing, but I guess it was true that everyone did own at least one pair of acid wash jeans.

I don’t buy my clothes at places like Abercrombie, or Hollister because I don’t think that a) I’m fit enough and b) I’m white enough (don’t get me started on B). That does allow me to have a less trendy approach in my clothes. Someone could also try to explain to me that me being a Virgo makes me pick less trendy clothes, but I probably won’t absorb what you just told me.

I fear that in 10 years, I will look at my closet and go: “I can’t believe this weird combination of blues and browns.” Will my fashion sense become timeless, or am I going to be following the same trends?
