Top 30 Artists of 2011: #13 – Nicki Minaj

Total Points - 108

Charted Songs:

41 Super Bass – Nicki Minaj 60 points

69 Moment 4 Life – Nicki Minaj Featuring Drake 32 points

92 Where Them Girls At – David Guetta Featuring Flo Rida & Nicki Minaj 9 points

94 Fly – Nicki Minaj Featuring Rihanna 7 points

Last Year’s Rank: N/A

Nicki Minaj is like the weird best friend you always wanted to have. She’d sit there and watch America’s Next Top Model (I’m still shocked that Nicki showed up on America’s Next Top Model as a judge) and talk about how while Allison was weird, she had modeling potential. She’d be the one who was trying to make leg warmers as arm warmers cool. She’d be wearing a different weave every week. She would be practicing her bad British accent just to make you laugh, then realize that maybe it’s not supposed to be British, but maybe just “posh.” I think it’d just be cool to hang around her.

Nicki got a lot of exposure this year, but the one song that really was the definitive song for me this year was “Super Bass” it’s catchy enough where the repetitive use of the word “Boom” still somehow works even after the billionth time I’ve heard the song.

Of all the parodies, I loved the Jesus loving “Super Grace”

[America's Next Top Model – Season 16 Episode 4]

The girls come back from the house and Alexandria was worried about the bad attitude on set. Kasia talked to the girls about how she didn’t think Alexandria should have been rewarded for being a diva. She’s been modeling for three years and didn’t appreciate the opportunity. Sara was depressed about her bottom two and she wanted to deal with her self-doubt. She felt less like a woman, but she needed to find her inner confidence. Several girls including Sara sat in one of the bedrooms and discussed their future plans. Alexandria immediately turns diva and announced how she will be working for IMG models; she questioned Sara’s intentions.

A Tyra mail arrived and it warned about careers going in “flames.” The next day the girls are shuttled to a runway challenge. Miss J announced that they would be modeling for Geoffrey Mac, who has designed for Lady GaGa. Dalya thought she had the walk, but Miss J pointed out a twist: fire. There was a degree of nervousness when the fire was turned on. The winner would get two dresses from the Geoffrey Mac collection. The girls got ready for hair and makeup. The hairstylist removed Molly’s horrible hair extensions, but it left her with crazy hair. Hannah was worried about catching on fire. Miss J pointed out that if the girls did fall, they should clap their hands to put out the fire.

America’s Next Top Model: Big Hair And Bigger Attitudes

I was really disappointed this week with the America’s Next Top Model photos.

So far the girls have built themselves a very underwhelming portfolio.

The girls were given such beautiful outfits and Pamela Hanson did a horrible job dealing with lighting. Why is there a big spot of light on Dalya’s face and why are some of the shots of the girls blurry but the foliage around them is in sharper focus?

Alexandria – Alexandria’s harsh attitude came roaring out this episode and I was happy to hear that she got a pimple on her lip.

It felt like a little bit of karma, even though it would have been easily touched up by both makeup and computer magic. Alexandria’s makeover photo looked like a tired and less enthused Caridee from Cycle 7.

The model hopefuls arrived back at the home and saw a sign that said “Pull Me.” Monique pulled the cord and it was a list of different makeovers. Sara was worried that she got the “Manly” haircut, but she wanted extensions to work with her feminine features. Dominique was worried about how the negative energy of all the critiques was eating her up. We got a montage of girls that wanted to keep their hair, and others that wouldn’t have minded a change. Dalya and Molly were worried about being the bottom three and hoped that the makeovers will be a new look for them.

The contestants got bussed to Prive Salon in Hollywood for their makeovers. The two Jays showed up and introduced Laurent D., owner of the salon. Miss J reminded the girls that they will have their makeover photo shoot right afterward. Troy Jensen, their photographer, was excited, but in all reality, all the makeover shoots look the same: some sort of bikini/underwear on a grey background. The girls started getting their hair washed and Brittani was first. Her hair got cut short and received bangs almost instantly; she trusted the change. Jaclyn was nervous, but the hair stylists put more curls in her hair, she was expecting straightened hair. Jaclyn had confidence in her shot.

This week of America’s Next Top Model saw the departure of Ondrei and apparent senior citizen Nicole, but there were just several odd elements to this episode.

Why did it seem like the girls didn’t know how to marinade chicken?

To make it worse, why did Dalya think that you couldn’t wash a bowl of salmonella?

Why does Tyra think that her offensive French accent is acceptable, let alone funny? None of the food she even talked about was French.

As for the photoshoot, the whole penciled in eyebrows are one of the stupidest visuals that Tyra could have done, but then people drawing on the part-line of the girls’ hair? Ridiculous. Maybe these girls should have a few more photoshoots that could actually train them for Italian Vogue.

[America's Next Top Model - Season 16 Episode 1]

Tyra introduced this season of America’s Next Top Model by joking around about all the previous seasons’ casting episodes. She poked fun of previous contestant auditions’ archtypes including that one b*tch contestant that would scream, “I’m not here to make friends.” There is no actual casting week this season.

Of course, Tyra decided to fake out the girls and teach them a lesson on rejection. While the 14 girls were introduced to the Jays like a normal casting week, they were punked into thinking they were eliminated.

We flashed back to Los Angeles, when the girls arrived for what they thought was casting week. The Jays had an evaluation and a photo and, while in the background, Tyra selected her 14. We’re introduced to several contestants: Monique had some hooch issues. Kasia was a plus sized model who was in V Magazine (in an amazing leopard outfit). Sara was the stereotypical androgynous not-model model.

Pink
Total Points: 87
Charted Songs: “Raise Your Glass” – #14

I’m very happy that Pink is not only still prominent in the music industry, that she is pregnant. I really hope she does have a son so that she will actually name him Jameson. Who expected a music career like this from the girl with short neon-pink hair singing R&B music about how she just wanted real love. To me, Pink represents that underdog that finally got to that point where she can do whatever the hell she wants and can get away with it. She’s well… “Too School for Cool.”

It’s funny, the first time I heard the song I thought, “Oh it’s another one of those songs that Adam Lambert* could have taken.” But it grew on me instantly when I actually heard the lyrics to the song. It’s all about underdog pride; celebrating how everyone is different and original. Kind of like watching Ann win ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ It’s actually an anthem that resonated (apparently) with many of my Facebook friends as well.

I was a bit disappointed by the use of the song on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ but I guess that’s what we/you get for making the song an “instant dance.” I’m sure we’ll see the instant dance again next season.

*Random Fact: Adam Lambert’s song “Whataya Want from Me” was orignally performed by Pink and was supposed to be on her album Funhouse. It was cut and eventually given to Adam Lambert. To make it even more interesting, he was nominated for a Grammy. [He lost]
