5) The Veronicas - Untouched

The thing about "Untouched" was the fact that the song came very early in 2009, so it would clearly be looked over for many people. The song was originally out in 2007 and slowly gained momentum until it peaked at 17 on the Billboard charts. I love it's heavy pop-rock driven beat and I appreciate any song that adds a string section.

The lyrics are horribly catchy and obscure (I go Ooh-Ooh, you go Ah,Ah. A la la la, A la la la) and the slight stutter through the song is great.

I will say that The Veronicas popped up in my music world with their song "Goodbye to You" which was on a commercial (I believe for Yaz) the only thing was that a lot of their music sounded the same.

I still don't know what Yaz is really for. I thank God (Buddah, Ganesh, or whomever is in charge of gender choices) that I'm a guy.

Either way, great song, yet another catchy beat, two pretty girls, okay music video.

29) Leona Lewis - Happy

We all know how Leona Lewis got famous and how I fell in love with the song "Bleeding Love" after the dance performance on So You Think You Can Dance. Happily, she hasn't become a one hit wonder, but I still don't think that anything she's done has topped her first hit. I was indifferent about "Better in Time." Her big single for 2009, "Happy" hasn't really connected either, but there's something I can't pinpoint why I like it. It's probably the high key she hits.

The thing about Leona Lewis' song that was probably the reason why it made this list was the fact that I kept hearing the song during the commercials for Precious. Have I watched the movie yet? Not yet, but it's on the list. A lot of Oscar-worthy films come out during the holiday season and I'll make time for it. Now, I'm pretty sure that this song was just in good timing and only used for the previews, but the movie looks good anyway.

My biggest problem? Every time I've seen Leona perform this song live, it's been shoddy and bad. The Divas 2009 concert performance was crap and when she performed this on Dancing with the Stars, she lip-synced through the whole thing except for the high note. If you can't make a song that you don't know how to sing live, you better do something to fix it. I'll even forgive you if you have to sing down a key (ahem Whitney Houston).

So I mention time and again that I walk every morning on a park close to a somewhat major road. The people walking seem to be normal and happy. Sure they may only wear blues, whites, and pinks (or the occasional weird old man faded green/yellow), but they all seem normal. There’s always the family on the bikes, the women pushing the baby in the stroller, the dog walkers, and recently some cross-country set of teens. They must be from a local school prepping for September.

I often see things lying on the side of the pathways, garbage mostly. Most of the time, it’s a newspaper on a bench, or a electrolyte filled drink (Gatorade, Propel, and Powerade). Recently there have been an increase of two things: Booze and Condoms.

Condoms?

Who is desperate enough to schmooze a girl in a park with Smirnoff Ice in a park? They don’t have any privacy at home do they? But the really open part of the parks? Walking three feet gets you to a slightly covered set of woods. (Sidebar: I’ve seen condoms there as well). But who wants to have sex on a bench.

Granted, I probably shouldn’t be talking. I’ve spent nights at New Paltz gazing at the sky on my thinking bench freshman year, but I wasn’t boozing or using condoms. When I would walk home with friends from a bar like Cuddy’s or Oasis, we never had bottles in hand. Too many cops were around and ready to give you a ticket.

The park where I walk has recently placed signs saying “Park Closes at Dusk.” I can’t help but think that the increase of booze and condoms must have something to do with it. I recall hearing that in my childhood that there were drug users in the park (a park?), but it was further south. Maybe things have slowly started to creep north.

Sometimes I just can't trust a television based product.

There’s something I don’t trust about things seen on TV. I did get the opportunity to watch a few episodes of Pitchmen, the show following Billy Mayes and Anthony Sullivan, during their whole Billy Mayes tribute day. It helped soften the distrust actually. The two of them continuously tested the products, turning interns and assistants into guinea pigs. They wouldn’t put their stamp of approval on just anything.

Products seen on television for me are hit and miss. First, a kind of miss. I purchased a Snuggie for Eric (I am disappointed that leopard print didn’t exist at that point, because that would have been funnier) and although the Snuggie kind of worked, it was mostly a gag gift. In all truths the Snuggie was a robe you put on backwards. And it had the worst static electricity associated with it. It could have been the fact that it hasn’t been washed yet, but fear kicked in that the item would shrink.

(Don’t even get me started on that Dog Snuggie thing.)

Going to the hit side, I recently helped Eric’s cousin move from one apartment to another. She had to clean or else she would have been fined some obscure amount just for a chink on the wall or a messy carpet. She pulled out the OxyClean. She scooped some of the powder, mixed it with a little bit of water and started scrubbing the walls and carpet. In a few minutes the “gross” went from the walls to the paper towel. I was almost shocked that the thing worked. I have placed OxyClean on my list of things to buy the next time I’m at the supermarket. I’m now convinced that it may actually brighten my whites without bleach.

I guess in the end Billy Mayes would only put his stamp of approval on anything that he himself believed in. It makes me less nervous about the products that Billy and Sully put their stamp of approval on, but it makes me more nervous about that other guy. You know: the one who beat up prostitutes. (Wiki Vince Shlomi if you’re ever bored.)

Wayyyy back in November, I suggested to my mother that we needed Dick Van Dyke to come and clean our chimney. We’ve never used it since we owned the house and I thought it would be nice to just stare at fire.

A month or so ago my mother and I were discussing our gutters. They needed help and probably needed to be replaced.

Two Tuesdays ago, my mother pointed to a pine tree and told it, “I’m taking you down.” Thinking nothing about it, she went to work.

That night a big storm hit Yonkers. In that wonderful mysterious twist the tree my mother pointed out went down about 3/4ths of the way. Along with that, many other trees went down. My mother and father were at work. I was actually at Eric’s because I tried to surprise him on Monday. Let’s just say the surprise failed.

I went home last Wednesday and assessed the damage. Basically, a tree fell on our house. After the tree cleaning company finally swept the trees off of the house, we realized that it only did three things: it knocked out our main electricity pole, knocked out the gutters and it removed a few bricks off of the chimney.

I was convinced that the tree would slip and hit me while I took the photo.

The family managed to dodge any real damage to the house. Now the almost tornado has become a catalyst on fixing some of the little problems with the house. We’ll now be getting new gutters, the trees around the house will be trimmed, we may finally get rid of those damn bushes that eat my car, the other bushes around the house are finally getting trimmed, and the chimney may finally be cleaned.

Is it good luck that a tree fell on the house? Actually, yes. Weird how things work out right?

I’ve decided that I’m gonna try a continuing blog-thread that will spring up from time to time. I’m often asked why I like Disney. I’ll give one reason each post.

Because I like the man himself.

There’s something you can’t deny about Walt Disney, the person. He has passion, drive, and keen senses. Three qualities that I either want, or need to enhance. If anyone has gone through the One Man and his Dream exhibit in Hollywood Studios (which i normally dub The Studios), you would understand the turmoil that he had to go through (losing Oswald, war time, putting all his money in Snow White, etc.) and he still persevered.

I’m still amazed by what one man’s ideas accomplished. Without Walt Disney, we probably would have a very different view of animation, or even color. Disney was an experimenter; he didn’t want to follow the other movie producers.

I guess I just want to make an impact like Disney did. One day when I am old, I want people to think highly of me like they would of Walt Disney. I’m already convinced that I won’t make a huge impact, but if one person I know (or they read an article of mine) went, “He’s a good (insert noun here)” I would be happy.

Oh and the Family Guy reference (“Are all the Jews gone yet?”) is hysterical.

You know what? Occasionally, life blows. And I'm having one of those Mondays.
