Well, apparently not too bad. This weekend I spent all Saturday at the Philippine Fiesta at their section known as “TFC’s Got Talent.” I was informed on Thursday that there would be seven performers and I was the first (randomly drawn) performer to go. They were actually looking for people like Acrobats or random instrument players but landed with six singers and one hip-hop dancing group. Good (or bad) for me the hip-hop crew never showed. The lesson? Check your spam folders.
I stood mostly on the side of the stage as I got to watch different acts zoom by. Craig & Samantha, junior champions on Dancing With the Stars was there, as was some Filipino girl from a previous season of America’s Got Talent. Sadly, she really didn’t have talent. I don’t know how she got past. Any who, I performed to my best and got compliments from the emcee and several other people. The big moment was when the emcee turned to me and said “How would you feel if you knew that someone sang something better than you?” I told him that I know I did the best of my abilities. He responds by explaining to me that I sang the song “This is the Moment” from Jekyll and Hyde better than he ever did (he apparently had a CD).
Suffice to say that I didn’t make it past the semi-finals in lieu of two little kids and a girl that sang in Tagalog. That girl had a father/coach who was giving her the “eye of the tiger” speech behind the scenes.
Here’s video of the 6-year-old girl that eventually ended up winning.
It was almost too cute to handle. Perfect choreography to match her singing. I mean it’s going to become a problem in the future where the stuff becomes an annoyance because it’s no longer natural and just heavily contrived, but at six it’s cute. Mark points out that she has to lift into a key to hit the right key which is very annoying.
So I as a 23-year-old will continue to shrug. I guess TFC (or ABS-CBN) didn’t want another 20-something person to win but rather a good television piece to win. Then again, how can I compete with missing front teeth?
Wow this is a great resource.. I’m enjoying it.. good article
Who cares? She doesn’t care anyway. She’s just 6 years old kid who just want to entertain people. Last April, she sang in PhilFest 2010 in Tampa and also won 2nd place. It’s probably of what she wrote and read by EMCEE, “I love to sing and I want to make you all very very happy!”. Michael, I like your article and I like your voice(if you’re the 1st contestant). Just keep singing!
Thanks for the support, I’m not giving up any time soon. I was the first guy up during the Saturday performances, thanks for remembering who I was.
