My Top 30 Songs of 2009 – Number 24

24) Sara Bareilles – Gravity

I will admit that I tend to just listen to music on the radio, with several artists that I found on either college radio or browsing on iTunes, so lots of times I don’t wander through an artist’s full library. “Gravity” was one of those songs that emerged with the help of television.

I liked “Love Song” but didn’t think much from Sara. I figured that she emerged from the singer-songwriter age of females that happened within that similar pop sound. You know, like Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton before her, she really didn’t break the mold. Her voice was above average and her lyrics were catchy. Top 40 fodder.

Luckily for me, they used the song “Gravity” on So You Think You Can Dance. The dance this summer was so moving that the song was almost instantly downloaded to my iPod. The song is simplistic and beautiful, the crackly voice of Sara is like the water she sings about in the song. She gains power as the song progresses and then right at the end, it seems like the gravity gets to her yet again.

Will I check out more of Sara’s music? Probably not, but she at least garnered three songs that I like.
