American Idol and gays

  • Once in a while I write articles that don’t make it because there aren’t enough physical articles to back up claims. This one was deemed a little too opinionated. But I liked the article, so here you go.

Why is it that America, or American television executives, have problems with gay American Idol contestants? If a person can sing, they can sing. Instead of his music being praised, poor Adam Lambert is in the news for other reasons.

This season, rumors have been going around about Adam Lambert being gay. First of all, with all the evidence, it seems clear which side of the fence Adam stands (That or Adam is sitting on the fence). But the biggest point is that he clearly is a qualified singer, with the combination of his visual and vocal appeal. Funny enough, no one seems to mind that Nick Mitchell is walking around as Norman Gentle. Norman is basically a pastiche of different homosexual qualities (Broadway, Cabaret, Glitter, General Femininity) and he’s being applauded for it. Also with these rumors, why haven’t I heard about rumors about Nathaniel Marshall being gay, that man can keep homeless people warm just by standing there.

There have been several gay contestants. Other than Clay Aiken, both Jim Verraros and RJ Helton in season one turned out to be gay as well. The winner of the first Pop Idol, Will Young, still has a career going for him. Although he didn’t do well, Danny Noriega from last season got support from Rosie O’Donnel after the show. I don’t understand why Adam could be both successful and gay. Hasn’t anyone heard of Freddie Mercury?

I believe that the gay community is an untapped gold mine of income for many musicians. Artists like Lady Gaga have emerged with the support of the gay community behind her and she’s already got two top ten singles in the US.

Reality TV also attempts to grab a slice of different American types. Survivor tends to have at least one gay person a season (along with their one African-American, Asian, and Latino). The Amazing Race has gay father/son team Mel and Mike White. I could keep going, but I would name almost every reality show.

Lets all get back to the point of Idol: Talent. In all shapes and forms. That and I’m still prepping for an Adam/Danny final two.
