2) Lady GaGa – Papparazzi
Unlike many artists, it was hard to pinpoint which one song would represent Lady GaGa. “Poker Face,” “LoveGame,” and “Bad Romance” were all strong representations of her sound, but I think the VMA performance of “Paparazzi” was what put that song over the top. The fact that it was an original performance (Beyonce’s was a rehash, Pink used the trapeze section from her tour, Muse was just a normal performance, and Jay-Z kinda stood there. The only other performance I considered “original” was Taylor Swift’s and only the first half was any good) broke it away from the meh performances. And the fact that she opened the performance with a really slow version of “Poker Face” was amazing.
Back to “Papparazzi” though. The song itself really over the top and a nice jab to the whole attention getting society we have. I love the melody and I’ve heard a stripped version of the song and it’s still beautiful:
Sometimes, you just need a piano. Can Britney do that? No.
Also, she knows how to do an SNL performance:
I found the music video to be amazing. The sheer fact that Lady GaGa spends time making really kick ass music videos when places like MTV doesn’t even play music videos anymore. They have an HD capable channel and many videos are just amazing on a full rectangular screen.
Where was I? Lady GaGa. I find her to be fascinating. From what I’ve read she’s worked her ass off to get to where she is today. Hell, how she managed to make a deluxe album in such a short time… I mean i know, that seems like the norm (see Mariah Carey)…but The Fame Monster could have stood as it’s own album with several really strong songs including “Speechless” and “Telephone.”
I wish her the best for next year Grammys and all.
