My Top Songs of 2009 – A song I totally Forgot

* Asher Roth - I Love College

I was convinced that this song was actually released in 2008, but I can't say how much I like "I Love College" by Asher Roth. The guy sounds like Eminem when he raps, but the fact of the matter is that I doubt that Eminem even finished high school.

The lyrics is the best part of the whole song, all the references are spot-on to what the college experience is about. The sample in the background is just subdued and something you would love when you're drunk/high. I love the bridge where everyone screams "Keg Stand! Keg Stand!"

Ironically, I just caught this music video parody:

Hysterical.

If I was to place this song in my list it would be around 20-21, but it seems unfair to the people that are already there to just bump them fully off the list.

My Top 30 Songs of 2009 – Number 24

24) Sara Bareilles - Gravity

I will admit that I tend to just listen to music on the radio, with several artists that I found on either college radio or browsing on iTunes, so lots of times I don't wander through an artist's full library. "Gravity" was one of those songs that emerged with the help of television.

I liked "Love Song" but didn't think much from Sara. I figured that she emerged from the singer-songwriter age of females that happened within that similar pop sound. You know, like Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton before her, she really didn't break the mold. Her voice was above average and her lyrics were catchy. Top 40 fodder.

Luckily for me, they used the song "Gravity" on So You Think You Can Dance. The dance this summer was so moving that the song was almost instantly downloaded to my iPod. The song is simplistic and beautiful, the crackly voice of Sara is like the water she sings about in the song. She gains power as the song progresses and then right at the end, it seems like the gravity gets to her yet again.

Will I check out more of Sara's music? Probably not, but she at least garnered three songs that I like.
